As a mom and woman who has lived with a chronic illness for 25+ years sometimes life creeps in and you need to be reminded of just how blessed you are. Living with an illness that has led to a mobility struggle is hard. I am not going to sugarcoat it. However, that doesn’t mean my life isn’t full of blessings.
Watching ENCANTO this past week with my family reminded me just how blessed I really am as a wife, mom, and daughter.
About Encanto, it’s the story of a family blessed with magical powers- each member of the family except one girl- the protagonist of the story Mirabel. Without any spoilers, all I would say is the story is about how Mirabel discovers her special powers in the most unlikely of ways and realizes her greatest miracle is “she” herself.
3 Valuable Lessons ENCANTO Taught Me
Lesson 1
Family is our strongest bond. It’s where our identity comes from and though there are times we feel we can not live up to the standards put in front of us by our parents, grandparents, siblings, and other family members. We are still loved by them.
Sometimes the tough exterior they put forth and the high demand they put on us is because they are trying to protect us. They themself have been hurt and they don’t want us to be hurt as well. So they put in place standards we sometimes don’t understand or feel we can’t meet.
But no matter what they love us. They are home the place we can always come back to when we need a safe place to heal.
Lesson 2
Not every day is a happy cheerful one and that’s ok. It’s ok to just be Meh and to crawl back in bed or set boundaries. We don’t always have to put on a smile when we are not feeling good. I’m not talking about physical illness but emotional. Sometimes we have so many emotions running through us that we just feel Blah. It’s okay to feel that and it’s okay to say so.
One of the most important steps in self-love and self-care is acknowledging we need time to sort through our emotions and to not slap on a happy face for everyone. Take time to care for yourself.
Lesson 3
The biggest miracle in your life is “you”. Many of us are like Mirabel we look at others and what they are doing and think we aren’t as special because we can’t do what they do. This is even more so now in a time of Social Media. We see people with perfect, happy lives doing things we want to be able to do but can’t. We begin to feel invaluable.
That is not true you are special, unique, and a miracle. Being you is what makes you special. the things you are capable of doing make you special. Remember no one can do you better than you. You are worthy, special, and unique and you were put here for a reason. You are special.
