A sensory activity is anything that involves the 5 senses (taste, touch, smell, hearing, sight).
After my diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, I did months of occupational therapy to help recover nerve connection. Some of the activities I did seemed trivial or even childish. It wasn’t until I started asking questions however that I learned just how important sensory activities are not only for recovery but also for developing nerves.
From birth through to early childhood, children use their senses to explore and try to make sense of the world around them. They do this by touching, tasting, smelling, seeing, moving, and hearing.
Children and even adults learn best and retain the most information when they engage their senses. Our memories associated with one or more of our senses. Such as cookies baking or a song on the radio. These simple things tied to happy childhood memories.
Making slime this week with my nieces. It brought back a happy memory. I was playing with the slime. I remembered back to when my son and I would play for hours with slime. The memory was a happy one, tied to touch and sight.
Creating a fun and easy sensory activity
When creating a sensory activity it doesn’t have to be complicated or hard. Something as simple as gummy bear slime can be a fun way to engage the senses. As week 3 of Camp Warner Bros. began my campers delved into exploring their senses. We made gummy bear slime in honor of the release of the movie We Bare Bears: The Movie now available to own on Digital, Blu-ray & DVD.
