I love to travel. For some people, this comes as a shock because I travel even though I have MS and it can be crippling at times. However, I refuse to let my disease define me so whenever I get a chance to hit the road or take a flight I do. So of course when I got a chance to head up to St. Simons Island for a few days, I jumped at the chance to explore a new place.
St. Simons Island is a beautiful place rich in history, oozing with southern charm and exquisite beauty it is the perfect place for a girl’s weekend getaway. Located on the coast of Georgia St Simons Island is the furthest westernmost island on the eastern seaboard/east coast. Located just between Jacksonville, FL, and Savannah, GA.
Amazing Things To Do On St. Simons Island
When we arrived on the island we were first struck by its beauty and charm. Eager to explore and see what this beautiful coastal town had to offer we headed straight for the Welcome Center. Here we were given lots of information and a list of fun things to explore. My top picks are listed below however there was so much more to see that I am planning a trip back.
St. Simons Lighthouse Museum
The St. Simons Lighthouse Museum is located near the village and pier. The Lighthouse and Keeper’s Dwelling were built in 1872 to replace the original lighthouse built in 1810 by James Gould of Massachusetts, the first lighthouse keeper. If you choose to you can climb the 129 stairs to enjoy the breathtaking view of the island. If heights or stairs aren’t your kinds of fun you can visit the Lighthouse Museum it includes interactive exhibits, rare artifacts, and period rooms that reveal the history of St. Simons Island and the life of a lighthouse keeper.
Trolley Tours
Whether you enjoy history, ghost, or nature there is a tour for you on St. Simons Island. We did the St. Simons Colonial Island Tours it offered the complete island experience and it had A/C something I really needed.
Look For Tree Spirits
If you are looking for a fun hunt take the time to explore the beautiful oak trees that are around the island. They hold hidden treasures that are known as tree spirits. These beautiful carvings are etched into several majestic and old oak trees.
There are many other wonderful things you can do from bike riding to boating. To learn more visit the Golden Isles.
