Growing up The Addams Family was one of my favorite shows to watch. They may have been creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky but they were also so much more. I remember how we would all gather around every week to watch them as a family. It was a weekly thing. Me curled up in my pj’s sitting between mom and dad to watch this one-of-a-kind family.
Fast forward 25+ years later and I was once again curled up on the sofa watching The Addams Family only this time it was my son sitting g next to me. I also saw Wednesday Addams in a whole new light.
How Wednesday Addams Taught Me a Valuable Lesson
As a child, I thought Wednesday was rather odd. Not in a bad way I just didn’t quite get her. I didn’t understand how someone who didn’t fit in could be so confident.
As an adult who has been on a self-healing journey, I now understand Wednesday so much better. I even learned a very valuable lesson from her while watching The Addams Family 2 movie this past week.
About The Addams Family 2
Everyone’s favorite spooky family is back in the animated comedy sequel, The Addams Family 2. In this all-new movie, we find Morticia and Gomez distraught that their children are growing up, skipping family dinners, and totally consumed with “scream time.” To reclaim their bond they decide to cram Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, and the crew into their haunted camper and hit the road for one last miserable family vacation. Their adventure across America takes them out of their element and into hilarious run-ins with their iconic cousin, IT, as well as many new kooky characters. What could possibly go wrong?
What I learned From Wednesday Addams
In the opening sense of the movie, Wednesday is at a science fair. She is questioning her place in the world and with her family as she knows she is different. She is wiser, smarter, and much more emotionally mature compared to her sibling Pugsley and her classmates.
As the story continues she begins to feel like she doesn’t belong in her own family. When a scientist wanting to use her for her brains starts fostering those feelings Wednesday sets out to discover where she belongs.
I connected with her on this level. As a teenager, I always felt different like my skin didn’t ft right. While other girls were into fashion, parties, and boys I was into trading and learning. As a young adult I was diagnosed with a chronic illness it made me feel even more different and broken. As I struggled to start a family those feelings of not belonging or alone growing. I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere that my illness and struggles were something I had to suffer with silently and alone much as Wednesday felt.
Finding The Light
By the end of the movie, Wednesday had gone on a journey of self-discovery only to come to the realization that the things that made her unique were things that made her belong in her family. She saw the light and embraces her true self. She realized her entire family was unique in many ways and it was their uniqueness that made them a family.
It was seeing Wednesday embrace all of herself that I realized I needed to embrace all of me. Wednesday taught me that the things that I feel make me different are actually the things that make me one of a kind. that my struggles, my flaws as I call them are things that make me special. She taught me that in order to truly be myself I have to learn to love myself unconditionally.
My Final Thoguhts
I truly enjoyed this movie. I not only learned a valuable lesson about embracing myself but many other lessons. This movie is by far one of my favorite Addams Family movies to date. There are so many great moments in the movie about parenting, family, and just learning to love oneself. I highly recommend watching in at the theater or on-demand as a family.
If you choose to watch on-demand consider downloading this creepy, kooky party kit to enjoy with your family.
