The holidays are approaching and as we feared, COVID hasn’t gone anywhere. One thing on our minds is, will holiday travel in 2020 be safe. Many of us have been forced inside due to the pandemic. Those who do travel do so cautiously and don’t have many places to go. There are exceptions of course. However, their hubris only reveals itself when they contribute to the latest spike in confirmed cases. Those very increases only perpetuate our dismal circumstances. So, how can we have a happy holiday? Is Christmas canceled? In some states, it kind of is. Your local government may be enforcing mandates that make it very difficult to spend time with your extended family, friends, and neighbors.
Holiday Travel in 2020
Holiday Parties on Lockdown
If I went to a party that only could host “3 households”, had to be outdoors, had to maintain 6″ (not enough by the way) of social distancing, required masks, and didn’t allow singing (yup), I’d find another party. That’s what many people are looking to do. If not for a permanent escape from never-ending mandates, at least for a chance to let off some steam, and enjoy the holidays without government intervention. The problem is that there is a safety issue. COVID cases continue to spike and there remains plenty of ignorance and willful denial about how to keep the coronavirus contained. For all our want to travel and all our precautions, there doesn’t seem to be any definitive proof that travel is safe.
What is Safe Holiday Travel in 2020?
This holiday season, critical thinking is essential. If you are going to travel safely to be with family, or just to find someplace less insane than wherever you reside, you have to reason things out and do your level best. That means you have to question everything, but only in a way that productively leads you forward to making an informed decision about your safety and that of your family. Travel by plane, for instance, may not be the wisest course. The airlines will tell you it’s safe, but who likes airlines?
Where are You Headed? What are You Leaving Behind?
The fact is, roughly 66% of 2020 has been under some form of lockdown and that percentage is climbing. There is no apparent end to the pandemic. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that things have gotten worse since world-class theme parks have been drawing potential carriers from all over the country to one of the nation’s biggest hotspots. In my personal opinion, it doesn’t bode well for holiday travel in 2020. That is unless you plan to travel by car and go somewhere where there will not be thousands of strangers surrounding you.
Travel Safely and Responsibly
Essentially, holiday travel in 2020 can be just as safe as staying home for the holidays. It can be worse. It can also be safer. What it comes down to is where you go, how you get there, and whether you follow a cleanliness and social distancing protocol that is proven to help.
