For some people, after 6 months of the Coronavirus, the idea of travel seems insane. For others, however, it’s a necessity. Those of us who are accustomed to traveling are well aware of the health risks involved. It has always been important to guard against the spread of illness while traveling, even before the recent pandemic. Just being surrounded by that many people in public places puts you at risk for contact with bacteria and viruses that cause sickness. On top of that, your immune system is often weakened during travel which makes you more susceptible to disease when the risk of catching diseases is at its highest. To hedge against this risk, particularly in our current climate, here are some simple but effective tips for how to stay healthy while traveling.
Keep Your Hands Clean
The concept of washing hands is not new, but as ubiquitous as this advice has become, it’s so easy to ignore. It becomes white noise and the reminders become ineffective. This is dangerous because your hands come in contact with too many contaminated surfaces to count. After touching everything around you you also touch your face way more than you realize. Rather than try to keep from touching your face, or touching other items and surfaces, it is way more effective to just wash or sanitize your hands on a regular basis. If you have the option to wash, choose that over sanitizer as it is less harmful to your skin.
Build Immunity
When you travel, you often have lowered immunity to potential illnesses. Part of prepping for a trip should include methods of improving your body’s natural defenses against disease. Taking vitamins and supplements helps give your immune system the boost it needs to stay effective while you come in contact with harmful elements. Starting your travels strong is the first key to how to stay healthy while traveling.
Get Rest Before Traveling
Rest also helps keep your body in good shape to fight off illness. When you get plenty of sleep your body is not worn down and weak. In my experience, I find that I always get sick on my way back home from a trip rather than the other way around. That correlates with my level of fatigue due to travel. When I begin my trip I am well rested, but by the end, I need to recover. That’s when I am most susceptible to contagion. So, keep in mind the importance of sleep even during a busy schedule and try to keep your body’s defenses up.
Wear a Face Covering
Whether or not it’s mandatory wherever you go, you should always wear a face covering. It doesn’t matter if somebody is making you do it or not. It’s just good sense. face coverings reduce the spread of highly contagious viruses. They protect the wearer as well as the environment. Especially with COVID-19, it’s important to react responsibly. It’s about much more than how to stay healthy while traveling. It’s about working together to stop the spread of a disease that is harmful to our communities as a whole.
